In developing its market economy, China is often characterized as “neoliberal,” since it has privatized much of its previously public resources.  But alongside this privatization there is also a blurring of the private and public.  Based on a chapter in a recently co-authored book (with Sylvia Yanagisako) this talk develops a nuanced approach to privatization – both its concept-ualization and its practice – in China, by using the insights of feminist theories about the public/private division.
